Below, we discuss the different styles available to you:
Rooflight Installations
These loft extensions, referred to as Velux conversions based on the branded rooflights used by an installer, are lower in cost and turn attics into habitable spaces without changing their original layout. Instead, windows are fitted into a roof’s slope to maximise natural light. The original roofline stays intact to minimise disruption.
Rooflights are around 25% cheaper to build than dormer extensions.
Dormer Extensions
Dormer loft extensions are structural extensions to pitched roofing, and form boxes with vertical walls to increase floor and headspace. The style works especially well for semi-detached and terraced homes as well as for bungalows. The dormer itself will match the original design of the roof and accommodates windows to increase light flow.
Dormer extensions will often fall within permitted development.
Mansard Extensions
To undertake mansard loft extensions in Brighton, Hassocks, Lewes or the surrounding areas, our construction and carpentry company makes major alterations. Work includes replacing the roof with a wall that has a 72° angle and a flat top. This increases the headroom in lofts and this style is perfect for terraced homes and period properties.
These loft extensions offer the largest amount of additional space.
Hip-to-Gable Extensions
The hip-to-gable style is best-suited to detached, semi-detached and end-of-terrace properties. It extends the hip of the roof upwards to form a new gable wall, maximising the total amount of floorspace and headspace. This is a design that we can combine with rear dormers to add extra room. Planning permission is often needed for this style.
Some hip-to-gable extensions fall inside permitted development.
